Across the country, farmers have been up in arms against three contentious Bills passed in parliament during the recently concluded monsoon session thanks to a big push from the ruling BJP party.
The bills – The Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020 (FPTC); The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 (FAPAFS); and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020 (ECA) – have been hailed by the government as historic, have come under criticism for being anti-farmer as these Bills could erase the existing system of minimum support price (MSP) and the APMC markets, leaving farmers at the mercy of big corporations.
Despite the nationwide protests against the Bills, which, according to the farmers, will give more power to private players, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent on Sunday, officially turning them into laws.
In this series, Delhi-based artist Pariplab Chakraborty depicts the rage of the farmers across the country as their fight against the system continues unabated.
