MCD Elections: 67% Winners Are Crorepatis; 17% Have Criminal Cases Against Them

New Delhi: A study has found that 42 of the winning candidates in the recent Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections have declared criminal cases against them. The Association for Democratic Reforms analysed the election affidavits of 248 of 250 winning councillors (the information on the other two was unavailable on the Election Commission website) and found that of these 42, 19 councillors are facing charges under serious offences.

The Aam Admi Party won 134 out of the 250 MCD seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party bagged 104. The Congress won nine and others won three seats. AAP’s victory ended 15 years of BJP hold over the MCD.

While 17% of this year’s winners have criminal cases against them, this number was at 10% after the 2017 MCD elections.
