‘RRR’ Song ‘Naatu Naatu’ Wins Golden Globe

New Delhi: ‘Naatu Naatu,’ a song featured in the S.S. Rajamouli blockbuster film RRR won the award for the ‘Best Song in a Motion Picture’ in the 2023 Golden Globe Awards, the ceremony of which was held on January 11 (IST).

The song is composed by M.M. Keeravani, who also received the award at the ceremony in the US city of Los Angeles.

This is the first Asian film song to win in the category at the Golden Globes. These awards are given to winners chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and are considered second in prestige only to the Oscars. The awards have been at the centre of significant controversy recently, amidst allegations that voting practices are rigged to result in losses for women and participants of colour.

RRR was also nominated in the ‘Best Non-English Language Film’ category, which was won by the film Argentina.

Being considered a front-runner for an Oscars nomination as well, RRR has ramped up unprecedented global popularity. It stars N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan Teja in roles of freedom fighters in a lush historical fiction drama.

In his review, The Wire‘s film critic Tanul Thakur wrote that Rajamouli “attempts something deceptively simple, a style that has the innocence of an inquiry: Can the cinema of the free country do justice to its enslaved people? Or, in other words, can cinema itself liberate?”
