An Open Mic

between doubtful drops of rain
the evening began

a drive
too slow
too long
to describe

no entrance
a mere arrival
to faces unknown —
a consolation
that did not last

one after another
the performances
mine and theirs
appealing and appalling
performances nevertheless

in a grand finale
of a dozen
the only performer
too good to be noticed
or too bad
either way
it ended
and I am the only one
