Each Other’s Own

Maybe I shouldn’t have treated you like a human,
maybe you shouldn’t have treated me like a dog,
but would that also mean that we wouldn’t have made each other our own?
I’m glad we treated each other the way we did–
each other’s own.

With everywhere you moved about the house,
one after another, you left a trail of mess–
tearing this, chewing that,
running away with Papa’s sock after he came home from work–
you were always getting me trouble with everyone.
Now, the house is spic-and-span,
and there looms a murderous silence,
for anyone barely talks to anyone.

Everyone that you knew,
you made sure to be their centre of attention, didn’t you?
And I can’t imagine it any other way Lil Wayne,
you deserved all the affection,
after all,
you brought it out in them.

Your death has left us all broken,
but we are also more ourselves than ever before.
In that, I can confess to the world, truly –
I am scared, and
I don’t want there to be a day where
I don’t miss you as much that it physically hurts.
You made us all unflinchingly more us, and how?

May be you shouldn’t have treated me like a dog,
maybe I shouldn’t have treated you like a human.
But would that also mean that we wouldn’t have made each other our own?
I’m glad we treated each other the way we did–

Each other’s own.
